On July 11, 2007, the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux (NACAB) launched the study ... So Long From Europe! On Romanian Labor Force Migration to the EU. Carried out in March – April 2007, in 35 localities in Romania where CABs function, the study unveils the profile of the Romanian worker in search for a job on the EU labor market, as well as her/his needs of information in this respect. The most preferred countries for Romanians are: Italy (23%), Spain (20%), and Great Britain (18%).
Romanians in quest for a job on the EU labor market rely very much on informal networks (77,4%) – relatives, friends, acquaintances etc., as opposed to getting in touch with institutions in charge with the matter. In accordance with NACAB’s study, the individual aspiring at getting a job in a foreign country is preponderantly young, un-married, with income above the national average, and active on the Romanian labor force market. “Romanian institutions would need to be more efficient in enforcing Romanians’ rights to freedom of movement. In this respect, extensive services, tailored on citizens’ needs, are needed. Otherwise, Romanian would turn to be an Ulysses awaiting for Penelope… and we are not that sure that Ulysses is going to return”, declared Dorian Filote, NACAB Executive Director. The study represents a landmark in NACAB developing its services of information and advice on topics related to EU information and it was realized under the project “Workers in the EU – Informing the Romanian Migrants about their Rights and Responsibilities on the European Labor Market”. ...
